Belty would definitely be working overtime during the holidays.

Forget wearing stretchy pants to every family dinner: this smart belt, now in the test stage, will automatically loosen or tighten as you lose or gain weight, or even bloat temporarily during a meal. Belty, which first premiered at the most recent Consumer Electronics Show, is a smart belt that connects to your smartphone, and is designed to help you become aware of your own waistline.

It might sound as if Belty, designed by Emiota, a French company, would be promoting our indulgent culture. Did you consume too much at an all-you-can-eat buffet? Belty will make you forget your discomfort. But through its smartphone link, Belty is actually designed to cast a watchful eye on how much your waistline expands, and keeps track of your fitness activity while you’re out and about — meaning that you can leave your fitness band at home.

According to CNET reporters who saw the device firsthand, the belt is actually pretty unflattering; it is said to look like the grating on a wearable stereo speaker. Although Emiota is confident in the future of their product, and of wearable tech in general, Belty is nowhere near ready for the consumer market yet.

13 Healthy Eating Tips for a Busy Lifestyle

With deadlines to meet, after work drinks, frequent dining out, late nights and early mornings, it’s easy to forget how simple it is to take control of your health. The following healthy eating tips outline some of the simplest ways to enhance your everyday health, boost your metabolism, maintain a healthy weight, increase brain function and start feeling powerful from the inside out.

1. Start Your Day Off Right, Eat Breakfast
Eating breakfast is important for sustaining energy levels and aiding in blood sugar management. Avoid eating a breakfast that is high in carbohydrates and sugar. This just sets us up for a blood sugar roller-coaster.

Choose a healthy breakfast that is:

  • high in complex carbohydrates (oatmeal, cereals, fruits, vegetables)
  • high in fiber (whole grain cereals and breads, ground flax and chia)
  • rich in protein (nuts, seeds, non-dairy almond or hemp milk, organic cow's milk and yogurt, eggs, quality protein powders)
  • and provides good fats (nuts, seeds, avocados, healthy oils like extra virgin olive, flax and coconut)

2. Don’t Rely On Coffee!
Excess coffee overloads your liver, dehydrates you (coffee is a diuretic) and increases the risk of blood sugar irregularities (afternoon energy dips sound familiar?). Your liver is the body’s detoxifying organ and if overloaded, your chances for disease, sluggishness and weight gain will increase. Try to decrease coffee or eliminate it altogether. There are some great coffee alternatives on the market. You can also enjoy herbal teas: dandelion root (liver detox), ginseng (energy), oolong (weight loss), green tea (concentration), and peppermint (stomach ease).

3. Stay Hydrated
This step is as easy as carrying a stainless steel or glass water bottle with you. Count how many times you fill it up. At least eight glasses of water a day will keep your energy levels high, your hunger down, your digestion smooth and your concentration sharp. When we are dehydrated, our bodies often mistake this feeling for hunger. Make sure to not drink water before meals as this can hinder digestion. Drink 20 minutes before and 60 or minutes after. Also, try and drink room temperature water because cold water increases gastrointestinal contraction and slows digestion down.

4. Decrease Packaged and Refined Foods
Most packaged goods are loaded with sugar, excess sodium, stabilizers, preservatives and Scary Seven ingredients like artificial colors and flavors. If you cannot pronounce even one ingredient, skip it! Another good rule of thumb is "the fewer the ingredients the better."

5. Eat Local, Whole Foods
How did our ancestors eat 100 years ago? Fresh meats, fish, beans, grains, nuts, seeds and fruit and veggies is what our ancestors relied on. Whole foods are the key to good health. When you’re wondering what you can bring to snack on during the day, try bringing a nut bar, some fruit or sliced veggies.

6. Dine out the Smart Way
When ordering meat at a restaurant, look for words like steamed, baked, poached, roasted, broiled or grilled. Do your best to avoid foods with the words fried, au gratin, crispy, escalloped, pan-fried, sautéed or stuffed which are good indications that the foods are high in fat and calories. If an item calls for one of these options, ask the food item to be grilled, steamed, or baked instead.

7. Limit Alcohol Intake
For every alcoholic drink you have, drink a glass of water. Alcohol dehydrates, lowers inhibitions and increases your appetite. As a rule of thumb, men should have no more than two drinks daily and females no more than one. Healthier alternatives are light beer, virgin Caesar, white wine spritzer, sparkling water or just straight up water with lots of lemon. No one needs to know your drink is non-alcoholic, just ask for it in a tumbler or whisky glass.

8. Avoid White Processed Foods
White rice, white bread, white pasta, and white sauces. White flour foods are all processed and the good fiber and nutrients are significantly reduced. Enjoy whole grain breads, pastas, brown rice and whole grains like quinoa, wild rice, millet and buckwheat instead. Go for a tomato or pesto sauce instead of white sauces which tend to be laden with saturated fat and sodium.

9. Carry Snacks With You
No matter how long you will be out for, always have a piece of fruit or a healthy protein or nut bar with you. Eating every three hours will help to keep your blood sugar steady and decrease overeating at meal times.

10. Don’t Overeat
Eat until you are 'sufficiently sufficed', 80 percent full and no more. If you are still hungry after 10 minutes, then have a little bit more. Overeating not only causes weight gain, even if you are eating healthy foods, but it also slows down digestion and can lead to more serious problems like irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes.

11. Increase Fruits and Vegetables
Eat 2 to 3 servings of fruit and 5 to 7 servings of vegetables each day. Think colorful, fresh and local! Be sure to eat lots of greens (kale, bok-choy, swiss chard, spinach) as these are the most nutritionally powerful foods.

12. Avoid Eating Late
Your metabolism slows down at night so you can count on anything you eat within three hours of bedtime sticking to your bones! Eating before 8 pm will allow your body to detoxify before you rest and helps get rid of unnecessary weight.

13. Supplement
No matter how good your diet may be, no one has a perfect nutritional profile. Welt smart belt watches your waist line

Even without any smart features, the belt is often the first piece of clothing to deliver the bad news that you might be packing on the pounds. Now a Samsung spinoff company has launched a crowdfunding campaign for the Welt, a fitness tracker that gives the humble belt a little more tact in its health warnings, by monitoring the wearer's steps, sitting time, and waist size.

Samsung originally unveiled the Welt at CES back in January as part of a lineup of prototypes born from its Creative Lab, alongside what we now know as the Sgnl smart watch strap. Back then, it wasn't clear if any of those ideas would make it beyond prototyping, but both the Sgnl and the Welt belt have launched on Kickstarter to fund production.

Waist circumference is a key indicator of a person's health, and the Welt would seem to be in a better position to measure that than wearable fitness trackers located elsewhere on the body. So in addition to the usual tracking of steps taken and time spent sitting, the belt measures the wearer's waist size over time. Long term, it can tell you if you're on the right path to your set goals. Short term, it can monitor variations in how your belly expands when you eat, to form a wider picture of your eating habits and warn you if you binge too regularly.

Syncing via Bluetooth 4.1 to an iOS or Android device, the Welt companion app will then present that information to the wearer. But rather than bombarding them with all the nitty-gritty details, the company has made an effort to trim the fat from the data, combining waist size, steps taken and hours spent sitting into a color-coded score, which can be displayed on a daily, weekly or monthly graph.

Battery-wise, Welt claims that a single charge can power the belt for up to 20 days, depending on usage. Once it's depleted, it can be charged with a micro USB, through a port tucked away at the bottom of the buckle.

Since it's a device that works best if worn every day, the team has spent a fair amount of time on developing the Welt's sense of style. The result is something that doesn't scream "fitness tracker," but comes in a variety of subtle blacks, browns and blues to blend in with your wardrobe as a regular-looking belt. It will be available for both men and women, and in formal and casual designs.

The Welt project team is looking to raise US$30,000 to take the design into production, and is close to reaching that goal at the time of writing, with over 30 days remaining on the campaign. Pledges start at $69 for a Welt Casual, $99 for the Classic or $129 for the Premium. Kickstarter Special Editions of each come engraved with the backer's name or a message.

If all goes to plan, the smart belts are estimated to ship in January 2017. The team demonstrates the Welt in the video below.

Just what we need, a smart belt that tells us we've eaten too much

Your belt already has a built-in mechanism that prevents overeating: When you've had too much, you have to loosen it.

But the makers of an upcoming smart belt dubbed the "Welt" - short for "Wellness Belt" - want to take that to the next level.

The Welt relies on a magnetic sensor to track waist size. It also tracks the belt's tension to determine when users may have overindulged. "Based on calorie intake, your waist can expand and contract over a duration as short as half an hour," the product's page on crowdsourcing site Kickstarter says. "Welt keeps track of these rapid variations in waist size to monitor patterns of overeating."

The belt comes with a smartphone app where users can review how their waistline has changed over time and when the smart belt thinks they had a little too much. The device also tracks some non-waist data, including the number of steps taken and time spent sitting each day. That data is available through the app, along with "tips and warnings for your health," according to the Kickstarter page.

Although it's true that waistlines (and weight) can change dramatically even in a single day, just judging the tension of a belt may leave out important context and unnecessarily alarm users, according to Scott Kahan, the director of the US National Center for Weight and Wellness. After all, your belt could buckle after you've chugged a big glass of calorie-free water, not just after you've had too many fries, Kahan noted.

Welt's creators, the Welt Corp., said the belt uses an algorithm based on digestion time to tell the difference between when you've chowed down versus just drank a lot of water. "Users can also manually input and modify the number of times they've overeaten per day" in the app, the company said in an emailed statement.

There is a real health argument for keeping tabs on your waistline: Self-monitoring is a "core concept" to many weight management strategies, according to Kahan, and the extra calories people eat often turn into fat that clings around the waistline. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those love handles can place people "at greater risk for developing obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease."

Smart belts that track health information aren't a totally new idea, but the Welt seems to be closest to reaching mass-market status. It was originally designed as part of an internal innovations program at Samsung, but now Welt has spun off with some seed money from Samsung's venture capital arm and turned to crowdfunding. Welt Corp. has raised more than $US65,000 on Kickstarter - blowing past its $US30,000 goal with four weeks to spare.

Products like the Welt are also a reminder that more mundane items are getting connected to the internet or apps. But some experts warn that the rush toward the so-called Internet of Things is creating more and more data that could leave users' privacy exposed in ways they wouldn't expect. For instance, your waist measurement may have been a well-guarded secret between you and your tailor in the past. But with something like Welt it will be carefully, digitally tracked - and once data exists in the cloud somewhere, there's always the threat that it could be revealed.
